Rutile is a major ore of titanium, which is a metal used for high tech alloys. It often forms needle-like crystal inclusions inside quartz. This form of quartz is known as rutilated quartz and it looks like small bars of imbedded gold. Rutilated quartz is quartz stone with rutile enclosures. Rutile is very high on the refractive index and disperses more than almost any other mineral. This means that when rutile appears in other minerals, it almost always appears in long, thin shots of color. In some gorgeous examples, rutilated quartz looks as if it is filled with gold fibers.
In many pieces of rutilated quartz, the rutile inclusions are all on the same axis. Because of this, each individual rutile strand is visible. The effect is uniquely beautiful. As a rule of thumb, gemstones are more highly valued if they have few or no inclusions. Rutilated quartz is unique because it is more highly valued for its inclusions.
Rutilated quartz is unique because instead of red or black inclusions, in quartz the rutile inclusions are a beautiful, translucent, golden-yellow color. No two stones are alike. One stone may have only a few inclusions; another may have so many that the stone appears opaque. Also, the needle-shaped inclusions may form in sprays or in a random fashion.
